Saguache County Imposes Temporary Moratorium on Solar Projects

Saguache County has imposed a temporary moratorium on solar projects for the purpose of establishing regulations intended to protect the citizens of Saguache County, wildlife and environmental effects.  Saguache County agrees and supports the renewable energy initiative and looks forward to working to provide renewable projects that serve this initiative.  Renewable energy with the goal of minimizing carbon footprint is the policy and desire of Saguache County.  The Moratorium is in no way designed to limit renewable energy projects that serve the goals of the County, reduce the carbon footprint, and serve the benefit of Saguache and Valley residents while considering effects on wildlife, environment, redundancy, and the interests of landowners.

Announcing Elvie Samora as Saguache County’s New Road and Bridge Supervisor!

Road & Bridge New Supervisor Update

The Board of Saguache County Commissioners are pleased to announce they have named long time road and bridge employee Elvie Samora as the next Road and Bridge Supervisor. He replaces long time serving supervisor Randal Arrendondo who is retiring in the next few months. We are excited for Elvie for this much deserved promotion. The BOCC acted on their belief that rewarding employees who have put many years, much effort and have gained experience and honed their skills for the good of our county as the best choice for leadership positions.

Samora has been serving well as Deputy Director for the last five months and has spent 45 years serving Saguache County. He took the lead role as Road and Bridge Supervisor on October 2, with Randal Arredondo stepping back as the “acting” Supervisor to provide cross training until Arredondo’s official retirement later this year. “I am honored for this opportunity to serve the citizens of Saguache County,” said Samora.

The BOCC cast a wide net and received 15 applicants for the position with two coming from within the county staff. After eight initial interviews and four second interviews, Samora was unanimously found to be the most experienced and able to run the department in a high functioning manner from the get-go. The second county applicant, Brandon Lovato was selected as the next Assistant Supervisor. Lovato has served four years at the Saguache County R&B as the Shop Foreman and came to work for the county with a good bit of mechanic and road construction experience under his belt. “I am thankful for the opportunity, and I am excited to serve this county that I call home.” Lovato expressed.

The BOCC hopes to improve road and bridge maintenance and building efficiencies, entertain new technologies, and prioritize the well-being of the Road and Bridge staff with this new leadership. We appreciate the many years of service from outgoing Supervisor Arredondo. Please join us in welcoming Samora and Lovato to their new roles and wishing them the best.  “If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at the Saguache County Road and Bridge office,” stated Samora. That number is (719) 655-2554.
